Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: Which Is Right for You?
Understanding the difference between static and dynamic QR codes, and when to choose each for your business needs.
What Are Static QR Codes?
A static QR code encodes the destination URL directly into the code itself. Once generated, the destination cannot be changed — the code always points to the same URL.
Pros:
- No ongoing cost
- Works offline
- Faster to generate
Cons:
- Cannot change the destination after printing
- No analytics or tracking
- If the URL changes, the code becomes useless
What Are Dynamic QR Codes?
A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL that forwards to your actual destination. Because the redirect can be updated, you can change where the code points without reprinting it.
Pros:
- Change the destination anytime without reprinting
- Track scans, locations, and devices
- Shorter URLs mean simpler codes
- Ideal for campaigns and A/B testing
Cons:
- Requires an ongoing subscription
- Requires internet to redirect
- Slight delay during redirect
When to Use Static vs Dynamic
Choose Static When:
- The destination URL is permanent and won't change
- You need the code to work without internet
- You're generating codes for personal use
- Budget is a concern
Choose Dynamic When:
- You may need to update the destination after printing
- You want to track scan analytics
- You're running marketing campaigns
- You need to A/B test different landing pages
The QRCode Channel Approach
QRCode Channel currently supports static QR code generation with full customization, logo integration, and industry tagging. Your codes are saved to your dashboard where you can re-download and manage them anytime.
Dynamic QR codes with scan analytics and editable destinations are on our roadmap — stay tuned for updates as we continue building the platform.
